{Valiant} Primary 4, Lesson 29: Nephi Prophesies

After coming back to his home in Zarahemla from preaching the word of God to the people in the North (he returned because the people rejected the word of God and because the Gadiaton robbers were filling the judgement seats and making laws that were wicked and were laying aside the commandments of God)
Because of the people's wickedness Nephi was filled with sorrow. He knelt in prayer and poured out his soul unto God on his garden tower. Many people saw him praying there because it was by a busy road. As they were passing by, certain men saw Nephi as he was praying, they ran and told the people and the people came in multitudes to see why Nephi was so sad. When Nephi finished praying he saw all the people gathered by him and asked if they were there so he could tell them of their wickedness. Nephi tells the people that they must repent. Nephi then points out how the people have turned from righteousness to extreme wickedness. Nephi warns the people that if they didn't repent their lands and homes would be taken away by their enemies and the Lord wouldn't help them fight because of their wickedness. Nephi tells the people that they are even more wicked than the Lamanites because they knew and were taught the commandments but rebelled against them. He tells the people that if they do not repent they will be destroyed.

Some of the people that were gathered by Nephi were some of the appointed wicked judges. They became angry and said to the people: "Why do you not seize this man that he may be condemned for this crime?" The judges were angry because Nephi was speaking about their own wickedness. The judges also asked the people: "Why do you allow this man to revile against us? We are powerful, our cities are great, and our enemies can have no power over us."
Some of the people agreed with the judges but others began to believe what Nephi was saying was true and said, "let this man alone for he is a good man and these things will surely come except we repent." These people knew that he was a prophet or he could not have testified of things to come.

The other people wanted to kill Nephi were compelled out of fear and couldn't lay their hands on him, and Nephi spoke to them again. Nephi reminds the people of the prophesies of  prophets of old like Moses, Abraham and Isaiah, and how they had the power of God with them. So why wouldn't Nephi be able to have the power to prophesy.

A lesson that Nephi is trying to teach these people is that the Lord does inspire His prophets to know the things which others do not know.

Nephi then tells them of their own chief judge that he will be murdered by his brother and he will then sit as chief judge.  Five men ran to the judgement seat to see if Nephi was correct. These five men say that if in fact the judge is dead that they will believe the things that Nephi was telling them. Finding the judge dead, the men believed and fell to the earth in fear and astonishment.

The servants of the chief judge saw that he was murdered and went to the people and the 5 men were accused of the murder and were cast into prison. On the morrow the 5 men were brought to the judges and said that the chief judge was dead when they had arrived. The Gadianton judges said that Nephi had plotted to murder the judge so that he would then be called a prophet. Nephi was arrested and brought to the judges and was asked who his partner was in committing the murder, the judges tried to bribe Nephi with money and his release. Nephi calls them fools and asked how long the Lord would allow for them to continue in their sins.

Nephi prophesies again!
Go to the house of Seantum (the brother of Seezoram-chief judge) and ask him if I (Nephi) agreed to help murder his brother.
He will say nay, then ask him if he murdered his brother. Seantum will stand in fear and will not know what to say. He will act astonished and declare that he is innocent. Look him over and you will find blood on his coat. He will pale and look as if he were dead. Tell him that you know he is guilty because of his face. He will become more fearful and confess to the murder of his brother. Seantum will then say that Nephi didn't know anything of the murder unless by the power of God.
You will then know that I (Nephi) am an honest man sent from God.

Everything that Nephi had said would happen did and the five men and Nephi were set free.

Here's a video of the story of Nephi Prophesying:

What do prophets do for us?
Heavenly Father us given us prophets to watch and warn us of dangers. They warn us about how we can be prepared to defend ourselves against those dangers, including those that are sometimes hard to recognize, such as temptations and evil influences.

President Monson has given us 6 ways for us to stay safe:
1) Choose good friends
2) Seek parental guidance
3) Study the gospel
4) Obey the commandments
5) Serve with love
6) Pray with purpose

* if you follow the link above you can get further explanation for each of the 6 points

I really love this article from the Friend. It's simple but tells how the prophet is called.

And here's another article that I love to answer, Why are Prophets Important?

{Sharing Time} May Week 1

Introduce the doctrine: Before Primary, write the sixth article of faith on the board. Ask the children to close their eyes. Tell them that after Jesus Christ died, the people became wicked and His gospel and priesthood were taken from the earth. Explain that this was called the Apostasy, and the people were in spiritual darkness—like having their eyes closed spiritually—until Jesus restored His Church through Joseph Smith. Hold up a picture of the First Vision, and tell the children to open their eyes. Help the children memorize the sixth article of faith by having them read it out loud together. Erase several words, and repeat until all of the words have been erased and the children have memorized the article of faith.

Encourage understanding: Make wordstrips for each of the duties in the chart shown below. Write the titles of the offices on the board as shown, and leave a blank column in the middle to represent the duties. Divide the children into five groups, and give each group one of the “Duties” wordstrips. Invite each group to place their wordstrip in the correct place on the board. Point out that the restored Church has the same kinds of leaders as the Church when Jesus Christ was on the earth.

Be sure to download the little ADORABLE finger puppets of the primitive and restored churches from LDS.org.

Be sure to check out Sheena over at Little LDS Ideas, she has given a few ideas for using these little puppets.

This little church is how I learned about the Restoration when I was little. I'm not exactly sure what manual it's in but it's awesome!

Here's some ways to use it:
1)  Create a puzzle and cut out each section, separate Primary into groups and have them make the puzzle again
2) Have one poster up on the board and have a child come up and pick one of the phrases to put onto the Church then discuss.

Both sizes include a page with the words and one without depending on how you use it. And a list of the words for each size.

{March Sharing Time} Prophets Speak for Heavenly Father

I'm really excited to be back at it again after moving my family to Idaho and this is the first sharing time and I just love it! Here's a couple ways to use these fun handouts for your sharing time or for FHE.

Printout the pages onto 8.5x14 paper (legal paper- you can find these at office supply stores for less than $10 per ream) Most new (2010- will have a way to length your printer tray to hold the longer paper, mine was on the bottom of the tray and on the left)Mount onto cardstock or cardboard (after you move--shameless chuckle) for durability on the spinner and punch a little hole for the brad.

1) Use the spinner like in the outline, these links below are AWESOME references to tell a little bit about each prophet. Have a child come up and spin then talk about that prophet.

2)Use the cards and print up a few key words from each of the prophets to give a little hint. Then have a matching game up on the board after discussing the prophets.

3) Print out as many of the cards as you want to and  scatter them onto the table. Play a "racing game". Using the spinner, spin and see which prophet the kids find, race to see who can collect them the quickest.

Friend and Ensign articles about each of these prophets. Read through and decide how you will describe each prophet.

** print on legal size paper (8.5x14) this is NOT standard size paper**
Assembled size is about 14x14

Thank you to Susan Fitch for her designs!

Primary 4, Lesson 2 Journal

Lehi was a prophet with great courage, commitment and devotion the the Lord and to his people. Because of what he had heard and saw in a vision, he knew that he must testify to the people of their wickedness. The people were angry and tried to kill him. The Lord protected and blessed Lehi and commanded him to leave Jerusalem so that the Lord could continue to use Lehi as His voice to the people.
Following the Lord's command, Lehi gathered his family, leaving behind his possessions and traveled into the wilderness to the Red Sea. Here he and his family stopped after traveling for 3 days. Lehi then build an altar and thank Heavenly Father. Lehi had 4 sons, Nephi, Laman, Lemuel and Sam. Laman and Lemuel were both upset that Lehi had made them leave their home and all their belongings in Jerusalem. They didn't believe that Jerusalem would be destroyed as Lehi had prophesied. Nephi wanted to know if what Lehi said was true and so he prayed and was told that Lehi was right, Nephi told Sam and he believed Nephi. Heavenly Father blessed Nephi because of his faith. Nephi was told that as long as he kept the commandments, he would blessed and would be a ruler over his brothers.

In the beginning of class, invite the kids to come up and write on the board the answer to the BOARD QUESTION...... What is a prophet?

Characteristics of a prophet (source)

(includes board question above)

Here's a fun game of matching halves to play to go along with Enrichment #2!

This expires on Sunday!! Take advantage while you can!

Resources to Study
The Calling of a Prophet (Religious Studies Center-BYU) this one is particularly interesting as it breaks down the pieces of Lehi's calling as a prophet and his vision of the destruction of Jerusalem.

{Sharing Time}Jesus Christ came to earth as promised by the prophets

*** A LOT LATER THAN PLANNED BUT I HOPE YOU CAN STILL USE THESE!***

Jesus Christ came to earth as promised by the prophets

For this week I really wanted to get the kids thinking about Jesus and about His birth. And about the prophets that prophesied that He would be born. Included in this lesson are the prophets-- Isaiah, Nephi, King Benjamin, Abinadi, and Samuel the Lamanite. Each prophet has 2 poster puzzles. One is about the prophesy and the other is just a "pondering/journal" question to get them thinking and sharing what they know and believe.

I'm sure that there are a lot of ways to use these poster puzzles (each puzzle is about 8x10) but here's what I was thinking. Each puzzle piece has a question/answer style to the pieces so you could
1) put one piece of each puzzle on the board then go through and discuss the one side and then have the kids either look for the other piece because you've hidden it or bring out your sticky darts and have all the pieces on board.
2) pull out your hamster ball/gift box/bag and while playing a Christmas song, the kids each take out a puzzle piece (10 puzzles = 20 pieces) then when everyone has a piece, let them find their match.
Then letting them read their scriptures and see if they know the answer.

May Sharing Time WK 3

I can't wait for this week! As soon as I had seen the theme for this week, I immediately was taken to Elder Packer's talk about spiritual crocodiles, read the talk HERE.

All you need for this lesson are the printouts and sticky darts/nerf gun. My Primary kids are going to LOVE this even those older boys!

Thank you so much for stopping by, for the pins and repins, for the comments, for the purchasing on Etsy. This blog has helped me find who I am, my family and my talents. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me latterdaychatter@hotmail.com

May Sharing Time WK 1

Materials Needed:
-Printouts
-Bingo Markers (candy, beans, plastic chips, etc)
-Small prizes/stickers

Lesson:
What is a prophet?

A prophet is a man called by God to speak on His behalf here on earth. He is a special witness of Christ and testifies of Jesus Christ and teaches His gospel. He receives direction and revelation from Jesus Christ for us.
A prophet can be young or old, a doctor or a teacher, rich or poor, the most important is that he is called by God.

Since the restoration of the gospel, we have had 16 prophets from Joseph Smith to Thomas S. Monson.
We can also find prophets in the scriptures: King Benjamin, Noah, Adam, Nephi

Using the names, cut them out and see if the kids can match up the names to the prophet (key included in the download), then keeping the big poster on the board, take off the names and "draw" out the names to see if the kids can remember who was who and try and get a bingo. You can make it more fun by adding in the teachers and do teams, teachers vs kids.

I came across a fun bingo game with the latter-day prophets that I thought would be fun but I wanted to make the "reference" card big to be able to fit onto the board in front so I enlarged the prophets art from lds.about.com and made it BIG (27 x 30 inches!!)

You can go HERE to download the bingo cards to handout to the kids.

May Sharing Time WK 4

Okay so I"ve had this game for this week in the making for awhile and I'm so excited to share!! Feel free to play however you'd like, but my thinking is print out enough for 4 of each cutout (or however many you'd need to let each child have one.  Now what you're going to do is pass out the circles (or make it more fun and tape them to the bottom of the chairs beforehand), keeping a set for yourself. As you call them out the kids are going to "match" to each other (by finding all their matches) and then matching it to yours. After you have all of them up. You let those 4-5 kids decide where it needs to go. If they disagree (which there are some that might) discuss it. I've found the most spiritual lessons are the ones that the kids teach each other. I wanted to put a third place because some things are okay to eat but we have to have "just a little bit".

1 place for the stuff that we can eat occasionally

May Sharing Time Week 1

May is here!!! I've seriously be counting down the days until May, I have so many fun ideas for this month's Sharing Time that I cannot wait to share.

**I've received emails asking for a more complete Sharing Time, so I thought instead of a bunch of individual emails I would nip it in the bud right here. My Sharing Time's are meant as a guide nothing more, I present ideas and you take it where the Lord wants you to go. You know your children and your needs, I don't. I give a basic outline for that reason. Pray and do some studying, I've found the Friend is an amazing resource just waiting for you to get your hands all over it. Use stories from the Friend, use songs, use scriptures, use games, this is your Primary not mine. Best of luck!***

For this week, just get a general standing for, "Why do we follow the Prophet?" for next week's more in depth examination of some of the things we follow and how we are blessed.

Some Questions:
Why do we follow the Prophet?
Who does the Prophet follow?
How are we blessed when we listen to the Prophet? (Don't go too far into specifics)
When do we hear from the Prophet? (Show the Ensign)

I love the idea in the manual by showing a picture of the prophet and when you ask who does he follow, show a picture of Jesus and draw an arrow from the prophet to Jesus.

I have made a cute little activity for Junior Primary that I love so much that this will be part of our FHE :)
*** NOTE I should have another handout for Junior Primary for next week's lesson***
Supplies needed: scissors (child safe) and glue for each of the kids ---if you have time restraints  cut out the pieces beforehand

*all the pieces are sized to fit the boxes page

 Senior Primary

*Look out for another handout for next week!
