Scripture Story Readers

Just like last year the Friend is creating some really neat pages about different scripture stories but I want them all on one page. These are AWESOME to take along in the church bag! We've found so mnay uses from adding velcro to the back and just keeping them on the big sheet, to cutting them out and reassembling the story and adding some of our own.

Please remember that these are to be printed on legal paper (8.5x14), you can typically print at home by adjusting your printer tray. Make sure that you also make the adjustment in your printer settings to print on this size.

Download them all at once with the Instant Access or click on each of the month below to download:

{Sharing Time} Jesus Christ was chosen to be our Savior

I love what's in the outline! There are so many options to be creative with the little letters!

Introduce the doctrine: Write on the board “Jesus Christ was ______ to be our Savior.” Have the letters c, h, o, s, e, and n scattered around the room. Let the children unscramble the letters to complete the sentence. Ask them to read Moses 4:2 to check their answer. Read the statement on the board together.

Here's my idea:

Attach each letter to the backs picture in any order. Then flip the pictures (so only the letters show) onto the board/table.

On the board write:

How was Jesus chosen to be our Savior in these pictures?

Events that I've chosen for the download:

The birth of Jesus:
Heavenly Father gave Jesus a body so that He could come to Earth. While on the Earth, He was perfect. In order for Jesus to be able to save us so we can return to be with Heavenly Father, He needed to come to Earth.

Jesus was Baptized:
Because Jesus was perfect, He didn't need to be baptized. He was baptized to show us and to follow Heavenly Father. He was chosen to be an example to us.

Garden of Gethsemane:
Here in the Garden, Jesus was chosen and volunteered to suffer for our sins, suffer for when we are hurt and need help. He was in so much pain that He bled from the pores (have the kids look at the back of their hand and point out their pores) on His body. He was chosen because He loves us and wants us to return to live with Heavenly Father.

The Resurrection:
Because Jesus was resurrected, we will be too. He was chosen to do this because without it our bodies and spirits would not be able to rise again after we die.

(I included these because they are evidence of Him being our Savior with the piercings on His hands and feet. You can easily leave these out and choose other pictures, but I love that we can know that He visited these people and other after He died)

Jesus Visits the Nephites and blesses the children
Jesus visits the Apostles

Another way to use the fun letters, is you could have a race from one side of the room to the other with 2 sets of pictures and letters. And the "teams" try and figure out what the word is.

{March Sharing Time} Prophets Speak for Heavenly Father

I'm really excited to be back at it again after moving my family to Idaho and this is the first sharing time and I just love it! Here's a couple ways to use these fun handouts for your sharing time or for FHE.

Printout the pages onto 8.5x14 paper (legal paper- you can find these at office supply stores for less than $10 per ream) Most new (2010- will have a way to length your printer tray to hold the longer paper, mine was on the bottom of the tray and on the left)Mount onto cardstock or cardboard (after you move--shameless chuckle) for durability on the spinner and punch a little hole for the brad.

1) Use the spinner like in the outline, these links below are AWESOME references to tell a little bit about each prophet. Have a child come up and spin then talk about that prophet.

2)Use the cards and print up a few key words from each of the prophets to give a little hint. Then have a matching game up on the board after discussing the prophets.

3) Print out as many of the cards as you want to and  scatter them onto the table. Play a "racing game". Using the spinner, spin and see which prophet the kids find, race to see who can collect them the quickest.

Friend and Ensign articles about each of these prophets. Read through and decide how you will describe each prophet.

** print on legal size paper (8.5x14) this is NOT standard size paper**
Assembled size is about 14x14

Thank you to Susan Fitch for her designs!

{Sharing Time} The words of Christ will tell us all things we should do

This week is a fun activity that my family did when I was in high school and it just stuck with me and I thought it would be PERFECT for this week's sharing time. So after a phone call and a few smooches to my boys we've got the Friend article and an awesome object lesson. Thanks Dad!

For this week we'll be using the Friend! Hold to the Iron Rod and you'll need to run to the hardware/plumbing store --- or you could use a pool noodle!--- and some rope and a blindfold.

At the hardware/plumbing store look for these foam pipe insulation (plumbing aisle) these come in package of 4 or in a longer singles about 6ft long for a little under $1.50!!

Then using some rope ($ store-automotive section) attach one end with heavy duty tape to the chalkboard and then the other to a chair wherever you'd like to start. Then as your kids begin at the chair they hold onto the pipe and move it towards the chalkboard with the tree.

On the floor you can either create a straight path or print a few from the download and tape those down by your "iron rod".

Today we are going to talk about a vision the prophet Lehi had in a dream. In his dream Lehi saw a tree with white fruit. He ate the fruit and it made him happy. Then he asked his family to come and eat the fruit. He wanted them to be happy too. Lehi also saw many people holding onto an iron rode. The rod led them on a strait path through mists of darkness to the tree. Some of the people ate the fruit but other did not.
The objects Lehi saw in his dream have special meanings.
The Tree of Life = the love of God   (point to the tree)
The fruit = is happiness and eternal life
(put the fruit onto the tree)
The iron rod = the word of God
We can find the word of God by reading the scriptures, listening to the prophet, and attending church.

Get some volunteers.

(this small part is a little different from the Friend article THIS is the part I remember vividly from when my family did it)

Have a couple try to get to the tree without the iron rod blindfolded after a few tries ask "Why can't you get to the tree?"  (I can't see where I'm going), "Do you think there's another way to get to the tree?" ( Help)
Have them grasp the "iron rod" and follow the straight path to the tree and get a fruit off the tree. When they get there and pick their fruit ask  "How did you feel knowing that you could get to the tree now?

Just as the rod guided you to the tree, we can all return to Heavenly Father by holding onto the word of God

You can print these as  engineering prints (Staples.com) for under $10 for all of them in color! Or just print out the at home printing pieces!

Includes a 24x36 Tree of Life
6 Fruit (about 4x6 inches each)
18x24 strait path (print what you need to go from your chair to the board)
AND
Easy at home printing for the tree of life and path

$1.75 USD

{Sharing Time} Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world

I LOVE studying the Doctrine and Covenants and one of my favorite sections is 43:29-35. This is all about the Millenium and I just love it.
Well verse 34 says this:
Hearken ye to these words. Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. Treasure these things up in your hearts, and let the solemnities of eternity rest upon your minds.
Isn't it just beautiful! Especially in such a dark world right now. When I saw that this was the topic for this week I had it. Treasure! Jesus Christ is a treasure don't you think?

The events from the Savior's life that I've chosen are:
The birth of Jesus
Jesus being baptized
The Sermon on the Mount
Jesus Praying in the Garden of Gethsemane
Jesus on the Cross
The Resurrection
Jesus Visits the Americas

(below included in the download)

Materials Needed:
Chalk to draw a treasure chest on the chalkboard
Jewel printouts (add the blank ones if you'd like to add any of your own- maybe add "why are you grateful for a Savior?")
A large cardboard box/plastic box
Filler (Easter grass, shredded paper, confetti, tissue paper, etc)
Scissors
Sticky Tack/tape

Read D&C 43:34 “Hearken ye to these words. Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Savior
of the world. Treasure these things up in your hearts, and let the solemnities of eternity
rest upon your minds.”
Ask the kids, how is Jesus Christ a treasure to you? What has He done that that is like a treasure?

Draw a treasure chest on the board with the printout of picture of Jesus with the scripture in
the middle.

Put the jewels in the box with the filler. Have a child come up and find a jewel put it up on the treasure chest. Then discuss:

Question/Discussion Ideas:
Birth: Jesus Christ is the literal Son of God, why do you think that Heavenly Father wanted Jesus to have a dad here on Earth?
Why did Jesus have to come to Earth?
How was Jesus coming to Earth part of Heavenly Father's Plan?

Baptism: Jesus is perfect, even when He was on the Earth. Why was Jesus baptized?
How was Jesus being baptized an example for us to follow?
Why are we baptized?

Sermon: Who was Jesus teaching?
How does the Savior want us to live our lives?
What other name is the Sermon on the Mount called? Why do you think it's called the Beatitudes?

Garden: Jesus was in so much pain, who came to help strengthen Him?
Who did Jesus suffer for? Why?
How can we use the Atonement in our lives?

CrossWhat did the people do to Jesus after He was on the cross? Why did they throw a spear?
Why did Jesus ask Heavenly Father to forgive them? Who did He want God to forgive?
What were some of the signs of Jesus' death?

Resurrection: Why was Jesus Christ's resurrection necessary?
How many days was He in the tomb?
Who was the person that saw Him? What did she do?
Why couldn't the apostles touch Him?

Americas: Why do you think the Savior let every person touch Him?
What do you think it would have been like to see Jesus and touch Him?
The people were so happy that Jesus had come as was prophesied, what did they do/say

(includes 9 jewels, lesson above, the scripture, and the picture with the scripture)

April Sharing Time WK 4

Below is included in download:
(this is just a portion from the lesson)

Heavenly Father has given us families to help us to be happy and prepare us for
eternal life with Him. In our families we learn important values and principles of the
gospel, and it's important to have an environment of love. Your families are the
first and most important to learn to love. But sometimes that can be hard ...

Pass out the hearts to groups of kids, maybe have groups be all not nice things or groups mixed or however you'd like.  Explain that the red heart, means STOP, have their group share something that may not be very nice. The green heart, means GO, these are things that we can do to show love to our families.

For WK 2 of this month, I took a house I made and a family, and I think if we used it again this week it'll go over really well because they've already seen it. So, this is just an extension version with the house.

To make the house "stand" on it's own, using two pieces of cardstock, I folded small  (about 1 inch) part and glued those the back of the house, then folded again (about 2 inches) to give it something to "sit" on, then I folded one more time (in the "middle" of what's left) glued the two pieces together. Here's a couple pictures of the back and the front.

$2.00
(includes lesson, house, family and hearts)

April Sharing Time WK 1

I loved when Jacque, found this idea and we ran with it with some tweaks! Using the story of Captain Moroni and the Title of Liberty, share with the kids that the family is central to Heavenly Father's Plan, using the large title of liberty to invite the kids to come and share about their family.

(Note this isn't the full story of Captain Moroni, purchase only includes a few of the cutouts)
$1.75 USD

BELOW IS INCLUDED IN THE PURCHASE

Materials Needed:
-Printouts
-Poster of the Proclamation
-Markers

Sharing Time Lesson:
Throughout this year, we have been learning about Heavenly Father's Plan. We come to Earth to gain a body, that we are tried and tested throughout our life, that we are baptized and receive other ordinances and we strive to keep the commandments to one day return to live with Heavenly Father and Jesus. Part of the Plan was for each of us to have a family, each of us are part of a family and families are all different. Some have a lot of kids, others only one or just a few. Some families have lots of family around with grandpas and grandmas, aunts and uncles. Some families only have one mom or dad and some have two.

Because our families are so important, how can we defend our own family and what having a family means to us?
In the Book of Mormon, there's a story about defending (standing up for our family).

Read (or have a SR Primary kid read it) Captain Moroni story.

Today we have something similar to remind us the importance of families and our faith just like the Title of Liberty, called "The Family: A Proclamation to the World". (Show poster).

Primary 6, Lesson 11: Abraham and Isaac

I have had ladies ask me to begin with the lesson helps for Senior Primary again and I have hesitated and prayed about it because I am not at all knowledgeable a scriptorian about the Old Testament (or any scripture), but I guess I'm suppose to do this, because this fell together so beautifully and I have learned so much while putting this together.

I feel like the Old Testament is understudied (is that a word?)  so for these lessons, I'll be doing journaling with questions about the topic, games, drawing, memorizing  and anything really that tickles my fancy in helping the kids (and me) really learn about the lessons and understand them. Please feel free to comment with your thoughts on what to add, sections that you'd like to see, etc.

Note: Share with the kids that these packets are for them to keep and to use, they don't have to share their journal answers (some questions may be more private them others, but that's the beauty of a journal, it can be a secret)

March Sharing Time WK 4

This month has been so hard to create "fun" games with just such an important topic as the Savior. But for this week, I wanted to still keep the topic of Christ as the key to this lesson. By keeping this simple, you'll be using a maze and the letters in the word REVERENCE to complete a puzzle that is spread out around the room. The purchase includes sample questions that you can attach to the puzzle pieces or just keep and read aloud.

To involve the kids more, you could use colored chalk and let the kids try and get to the next letter.

(If you would like a "key" please email latterdaychatter@hotmail.com)  I didn't include one because by following the letters you'll get to the finish.

March Sharing Time WK 2

I remember a lesson similar to this from when I was little and it must have stuck because it was probably 15 years ago that I was taught it and this is what stuck out when I was going through the outline for this week.

It was about how when we take the steps of repentance we can take out the "rocks" of our lives and become better. Jesus Christ, through the Atonement, has given us the gift of being able to be forgiven of the rocks in our lives when we repent.

I love how the outline brought in the scripture about Alma the Younger, perfect example! I wanted to be able to use some visuals though so these are from the Alma the Younger story cutouts (this isn't all of them), you can purchase them for just $1.60 (below printouts). It includes Alma when he's wicked, laying down and then when he has repented and an angel to visit him. These are about the size of a computer paper so all the kids can see them.
NOTE: If you purchase the cutouts, the free lesson plan below (including the shoe page) is included for your convenience.

THIS IS INCLUDED IN THE DOWNLOAD BELOW:
Materials Needed:
-small river rocks/pebbles for the kids (you can find them at the dollar store) they look like this:

-Printouts for board
-Picture of Garden of Gethsemane

Lesson (Included in download of printouts):
Begin by handing out the rocks and have the kids put them into their sock/shoe. Ask, "what is the Atonement?" (you can also write their answers on the board)

(Hold up picture) After the Last Supper, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane, there He left the disciples and prayed and went through great pains as He suffered every temptation, every pain, every sickness and every sin that anyone on Earth, had been on Earth, or would be on Earth would go through. He did this because He loves us and helps us through those things and He wants us to return to live with Him and Heavenly Father.

The Atonement accomplished two things, first everyone would be resurrected, second; those who would repent of their sins will be forgiven.
The Atonement was accomplished by Jesus because He was perfect and could suffer. It was an act that
we couldn't do for ourselves.

(Share story from President Hinckley)

Put up the printout shoe and have a few kids come up and walk around with the rocks in their shoes and ask how that feels? Is it uncomfortable? Can you walk a long time with that in your shoe?

The pebble in your shoe is a sin. How is repenting and being forgiven like taking the rock out of your shoe?

As we sin and make mistakes (which we all will), we have this uncomfortable thing come into our lives that we know isn't right and if we continue to make the same bad choices we can lose the promptings and help from the Holy Ghost. But when we take out the rock and repent, we are doing the things that Heavenly Father wants us to do and will be blessed and forgiven.

How do we repent? (Go through the "rocks" and discuss any that you feel necessary or if kids have questions).
