May Sharing Time Week 1

I've been slacking on this little website of mine, thank you for sticking with me. I greatly appreciate your emails and comments. Just a few tidbits...

#1 We are expecting! Baby #4 will be joining us at the end of July.

#2 I'm into my last semester of the Pathway program and will be continuing on to BYU-I for the fall semester. My educational journey has taken a back burner for so long that I'm very excited for this part of my life to come to fruition!

#3 I've been playing around with designing my own graphics and have become more comfortable with what I'm creating. This has taken up so much of my time in creating freebies and printables and for that I apologize, but it's been so fun to learn. You can see new creations on the Etsy shop.

Please note that included in the download are two files. The single jpeg is an ENGINEER PRINT for the board (these can be printed at Staples for about $2). The pdf file contains the at home printer material. For this lesson, you will need to create scenarios for the dirt clods to discuss mistakes that we make which are cause for repentance. (Lesson included in the pdf file) These could range from cheating at school, stealing from the gas station, lying about doing chores, etc I've included a single printout of the boy and girl for you to hand out if you'd like for the older kids to write their own answers. When we are baptized we are clean and pure, each day when we make mistakes it is like getting dirt on ourselves and it is only through the power of repentance and the Atonement and we can become clean again.

{Sharing Time} When I am baptized, I make a covenant with God.

Encourage understanding: Ask a child to come to the front of the room and hold his or her arms out. Then place a book in each hand. Read Mosiah 18:7–11. Explain that one of the covenants we make when we are baptized is to “bear one another’s burdens, that they may be light.” Ask the child holding the books if his or her arms are getting tired. Have two other children help hold up his or her arms. Discuss some burdens children might have, such as being teased, being sick, feeling alone, or struggling in school. Ask the children how they can help make each other’s burdens lighter.
Using children in visual demonstrations will get their attention and prepare them to learn. For example, this activity shows children demonstrating the concept of bearing one another’s burdens.
Encourage application: Tell the children that baptism is the gate that leads to the path to eternal life (see2 Nephi 31:17). On one side of the room place a picture of a child being baptized. On the other side of the room place a picture of the Savior, and explain that in this activity this picture represents eternal life. Tell the children that we stay on the path to eternal life when we keep our baptismal covenants. Briefly review these covenants (remembering Jesus Christ, obeying the commandments, and helping others). Give each child a paper with a CTR shield drawn on it. Have the children write on their paper a commandment that will help them keep their baptismal covenants (they may draw pictures to represent the commandment they choose). Invite a child to place his or her paper on the floor between the two pictures. If possible, help the children find the commandment in their scriptures and read it together. Repeat until the children have made a path between the pictures.
I really love what the outline suggests and just have a couple things to spice it up a bit! Here's a printout for the scripture in Mosiah.
* PRINT ON LEGAL PAPER (8.5X14) -- AT HOME PRINTERS TYPICALLY WILL HAVE A TRAY TO PULL OUT TO ACCOMMODATE THIS SIZE

July Sharing Time WK 2

I am  very excited for this week's Sharing Time. In our ward we have a little girl who comes with her grandparents and is in the 7-8 class and baptism is talked about a lot because all of them are getting/have been baptized. Naturally she is scared to death because of the description of what happens by the kids. I mean come on getting held under water in a warm "tub" would scare any 7 year old who didn't know what was happening. So... with this being said I am doing this lesson just for her and I'm sure a nice review of the importance of baptism will help the other kids too, but it's really for all for Avery!

(This is all included in the download below!)

Materials Needed:
Printouts
A Punch Box  I'll take pictures of mine but warning it will not look like Sheena's!
Tacks/Tape/Magnets
Squirt bottle with water

This is much like Jeopardy but without the topics or the points --- okay so nothing like Jeopardy--- the kids come up and pick a  turned over question about baptism/confirmation then answer/punch out the coordinating number to the question to get the answer and a small treat (our Primary rarely does treats so I think it'll be a nice change to get a treat this week of  Dum-Dum suckers)

I think I will pick the order of questions so that it flows and so I don't answer one of the questions while discussing the answer. For the graphics included, I'm going to include an extra treat with that answer and see if they can tell me something else about the picture (sacrament and Jesus being baptized)

Get a volunteer who is under 8 and "baptize" them by squirting them/sprinkling water. Then ask is that right? (No.) Are we missing some things? Today we will be learning all about baptism.

Have a child come up and pick your number 1 (or do it random) from the board. Read/have them read the question and see if the child knows the answer, then let them punch out the number, get their treat and the answer, discuss if wanted.

When the kids choose the:

Who baptizes- Young men who are Priests can baptize but they can't give the gift of the Holy Ghost.

How are we baptized- The Priesthood holder takes our right hand by the wrist and raises his right hand to make a square, he then says a prayer, we hold our nose and we are dipped under for just a second or two while 2 witnesses make sure we are completely under the water.  Why are we baptized by immersion? (it is a symbol of death and resurrection, just like Christ died and was resurrected so will we)

Why do we need to baptized. In John 3:5, Jesus says that we can't enter into the kingdom of God without being baptized. What is the kingdom of God? (after we die, we can live with God again)

Promises do we make - These promises are called covenants, we covenant with Heavenly Father that 1) take upon ourselves the name of Christ, 2) keep the commandments, 3) Serve the Lord. And in return Heavenly Father makes promises to us.

.How do we renew- Through partaking of the sacrament we renew our covenants
(Picture (extra) ---  sacrament--- the bread represents the body of Christ, the water, the blood of Christ.)

How do we receive the Holy Ghost - The gift of the Holy Ghost is given to us by the laying on of hands. Men holding the Melchizedek Priesthood (not a priest) will lay their hands on your hand (just like in a blessing) and give you the gift of the Holy Ghost. The baptism is only complete when we have been confirmed, we are then a new member of the Church.

Whose example- Jesus Christ, it is through Christ that we are forgiven of our sins and live with God again. Jesus spent His life teaching us how we should try to live. Jesus was perfect and because He was perfect He didn't have to be baptized but He was baptized as an example for us to follow.
(Picture (extra)--- Jesus being baptized---- Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River)

After you have finished the punch box, go back and ask what was missing when I "baptized" .....
1) I didn't have the priesthood.
2) ..... wasn't baptized by immersion
3)..... isn't 8 yet!

By being baptized, we show God that we are willing to be obedient to His commandments.

(includes the answers to the 10 questions, the pictures for the "extras" the lesson and instructions from above, numbers 1-10, and the 10 questions)

June Sharing Time WK 1

I've been thinking about this lesson for a while now and I can't get this idea out of my mind so this is what we're going with. I've been typing this up and it's now just flowing, I feel like this will be a spiritual and amazing lesson. If you use it or modify it, would you come back and share how it went? I'd love to know!

*PLEASE NOTE: I'm running more with Senior Primary for this part of the lesson, please see below for Junior Primary.

SENIOR PRIMARY
GET EARLY EARLY (AND A 3RD EARLY JUST IN CASE YOU MISSED THE 2ND ONE) TO CHURCH TO GET THIS ONE SET UP!

Materials you'll need: (you may not have all the materials but ask around- beauty of Facebook!)
-Stencil of something (star, heart, etc)for each child. I've seen making a stencil out of paper plates, but depending on the size of your Primary you might not be able to do that, or just enlist some helpers (Presidency, kids, husbands hehe) Make it a decent sized star (you'll need it at the end)
-Pencil or pen for each child
-2-3 of the same colors for each child or assign each class 2-3 colors (Valiant 8: blue, purple and red- give each child a blue and red crayon)
-Piece of paper for each child
-Printouts
-Stickers or something to reward the children (it's Fast Sunday!)
-Picture of Jesus being baptized (GAK 208, Primary 3-1)

BEFORE PRIMARY:

Put picture up on the board at the beginning. Put all the materials on each of the chairs beforehand (petpeeve of mine to waste time passing stuff out in the middle of Sharing Time) or give them to the teacher.
On the board right down instructions on the chalkboard
1) Get all your things from under (from teacher- wherever you're going to have everything) your chair
2) High Five your neighbor (something fun/silly)
3) Trace your star (heart, circle) onto your paper
4) Color your star with the 2 colors in stripes with blue ( whatever color) at the top then red (whatever color)
5) Stick your tongue out at Sister (you)
6) Draw a star (heart, circle) in the middle of your star with a pencil

As they finish, reward the ones who've followed each instruction step by step (each one including the "silly" ones) with a sticker.

Ask the kids who got the sticker why they think they got it..... (someone should say "because we followed directions)
Were all the directions easy? Or hard to do because you thought they were silly or people would make fun of you for?  (VERY IMPORTANT to ask that question)

What is something we need to return Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ has given an example of? (After answers, share this scripture: 2 Nephi 31:5) Be Baptized

What do we promise at baptism? What gift are we given afterwards? Why is having the gift of the Holy Ghost so important?
Read this quote by Elder Hales or summarize it how you wish.

"Each week in sacrament meeting we promise to remember the atoning sacrifice of our Savior as we renew our baptismal covenant. We promise to do as the Savior did—to be obedient to the Father and always keep His commandments. The blessing we receive in return is to always have His Spirit to be with us.
The gift of the Holy Ghost, given to us when we are confirmed, gives us the ability to discern the difference between the giving ways of the kingdom of God and the taking practices of the world. The Holy Ghost gives us the strength and courage to conduct our lives in the ways of the kingdom of God and is the source of our testimony of the Father and the Son. As we obey the will of our Father in Heaven, this priceless gift of the Holy Ghost will be with us continually. We need the Holy Ghost as our constant companion to help us make better choices in the decisions that confront us daily'." Elder Robert D. Hales
Are some of the commandments hard to obey all the time? Are some hard because we could be made fun of? (maybe for not saying bad words, or for helping the new kid at school - give examples)
How are we rewarded for obeying Heavenly Father's commandments?
What is a covenant? (A promise we make with Heavenly Father), What do we covenant with our Heavenly Father to do at baptism?
Put up the printouts one at a time discussing each.

JUNIOR PRIMARY

Show the picture of Jesus being baptized. What's happening in the picture?
Jesus was baptized by a member holding the Priesthood, named John the Baptist. He was baptized in the River Jordan. We are baptized the same way Jesus was. We plug our nose up with our hand and a member of the Priesthood dips us in the water, our whole bodies. We then receive a very special gift from our Heavenly Father. What gift are we given? The Holy Ghost.
We make a promise with our Heavenly Father that we will obey his commandments. What are some of the commandments?
If we obey the commandments, we will be blessed and Heavenly Father promises to forgive us when we make a mistake, He also promises that we can live with Him forever if we obey the commandments, another promise is that we can always have the Holy Ghost with us to make good decisions.

Amazing talk by Elder Robert D. Hales - Recommend to read before this lesson!!

Baptism Jar

Hi Guys! How do you like the new look? I've been playing around with HTML Code and such :) (If you want to know how to do anything, let me know and I'll be sure to tell you how!! How are you liking those Don't Eat the Prophet games?  Tomorrow I'm planning on doing the Primary April Theme bookmarks so look out for those too.
For now I have a baptism/Holy Ghost talk for you.
You will need:
~Mason jar (any jar will work, but about that size)
~a Quarter
~Dirt (enough to fill the jar)
~a Scooper for the dirt (the ones that come with baby formula, drink mixes, etc work great)
~Large bowl
Now for the talk....
Hold up the jar and explain that this represents the person who was just baptized. Hold up the quarter and explain that it represents the Holy Ghost and drop it in the jar and shake it. Ask the kids if they can hear the Holy Ghost. Add a scoop of dirt, while doing so give a scenario of some wrong doing (for ideas see below). Shake the jar again and ask if they can still hear the Holy Ghost. (which they should) Continue adding scoops, giving scenarios, and shaking the jar, and soon they will no longer be able to hear the Holy Ghost.
When we sin, the Holy Ghost withdraws from us and can't speak with us. Then ask the kids, how we can hear the Holy Ghost again, then talk about repentance and the atonement. And dump the dirt into the bowl and put the quarter back in. Explain that the jar is still dirty because even though Heavenly Father has forgiven us, we will still to able to remember the mistakes we make so that we don't do them again. As a little gift for the kiddo getting baptize you could have a different jar already made half filled with dirt (shake it around so that the top half is dirty), put a quarter on top of the dirt, then seal it with hot glue so that you can keep the mom's sanity and dirt isn't found around her house, haha. Then on the jar you could put this cute little handout.

Baptism Ideas and Wordart

I came across this idea a LONG time ago when I was teaching Primary and had the 7 year olds, so I have no idea where I got it from, but I made handouts for it (below) so here's the idea. For those 7 year olds getting ready to be baptized the following year you can have a Baptismal Fireside (not so much a talking and the kids listen, but ask and answer questions about the importance/covenants/what's going to happen kind of thing). For a little handout/treat at the end, you can hand out socks or towels (both of which are white - crews for boy socks, lacy top socks for girls) I did the socks, less expensive than the towels. And attached to either a little handout. (download below)
I also made a couple Wordarts, Baptism wording is hard to find, so I made you some.
Now everything but the Wordart is a separate download, so snag what you need and leave some love. Email if you have any questions!
